How often do you really need to change synthetic oil?

My manual says 15,000 km for synthetic oil changes, but my dad (old school mechanic) insists on every 8,000. I've seen YouTube mechanics say 12,000 is the sweet spot. I drive about 24,000 km a year, mostly highway. Running Mobil 1 synthetic in a 2021 Toyota with the 2.5L. Sent a sample to an oil analysis lab and they said the oil was still good at 13,000 km. What interval are you all following? Is the 15K recommendation just a marketing thing to make ownership costs look lower?

I do 12,000 km with synthetic on my Honda. 16,000 km feels like a stretch unless you're all highway. Oil is cheap, engines are expensive.

Toyota master tech here. 16,000 km is fine with factory oil IF you're not doing severe service. For most people, 12,000 km is safe insurance.

Oil analysis is the real answer. Every engine and driving style is different. I was able to safely extend to 14,000 km based on lab reports.
